Two Days of Clam Chowder & Fun

SANTA CRUZ, CA (February 22, 2019) – The Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook-Off, the largest and longest-running clam chowder cook-off in the country, gets underway tomorrow, rain or shine. The 38th annual event, hosted by the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, is a fundraiser for City of Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation programs,

There are forty-three amateur entries on Saturday February 23 and thirty professionals on Sunday, February 24.

Visitors will find both Boston (white) and Manhattan (red) chowders to sample, cooked by joyful chefs at colorful booths along the Boardwalk. More than just a cooking competition, the Clam Chowder Cook-Off is an entertaining event with costumed participants. "Fresh Prince of Shell Air," "Rocky Horror Clam Show" and "Nine Little Fisherman" are just a few of the themes visitors can expect to see along the Boardwalk.

Professionals participating on Sunday include returning winners East Side Eatery (Santa Cruz), Midgley’s Public House (Stockton), and LouLou’s Griddle (Monterey) plus local favorites like Rosie McCann’s, Ideal Bar & Grill, Mackenzie Bar & Grill, UCSC Redwood Sluggers, Jack O’Neill Restaurant and Lounge, New Leaf Community Markets, and Team Seascape.

Admission to the rain or shine event is free; tasting kits are $10 for 6 samples. Preparation starts at 10am, cooking at 11am, public tasting is from 1pm - 3pm. Winners will be announced at 4pm on Neptune’s Stage.

All proceeds from the sale of tasting kits benefit the City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department. Last year the event brought in $100,000 for Parks and Recreation Department programs. The popular event has raised $1,489,500 million since it started in 1981.
