Boardwalk's Chili Cook-Off Fires Up for Fun
SANTA CRUZ, CA (October 26, 2018) – The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk’s Chili Cook-Off gets underway this Saturday, October 27. Northern California Chefs will be stirring up sizzling pots of chili along the Boardwalk, hoping to impress the judges, win cash prizes and claim bragging rights. Most of the 45 entries are traditional chili, but vegetarian chili is growing in popularity with a dozen different meat-free options being served.
The Boardwalk’s chili competition attracts serious competition with returning professionals like Derek Rupp, a former winner from Capitola’s East Side Eatery; Michael Midgley. a former winner and Top Chef competitor from Stockton; and crowd favorite Ryan Pang of Bad ‘S BBQ, all looking for another win.
Despite the stiff competition, the atmosphere at the Boardwalk’s Chili Cook-Off is definitely about fun as competitors get silly with their bids for “most original” booth. This year’s early contenders for Most Original include Lost Boys Chili, Rebels without a Kitchen, Chill Out Man, and White Rabbit Chili.
Admission is free, Tasting Kits are $10 for 6 samples. Cooking starts at 10am, and public tasting gets underway at 1pm. Winners will be announced during an award ceremony at the Neptune’s Stage at 4pm. Tasting Kits will be sold at Boardwalk Ticket Booths.
A portion of the proceeds from Tasting Kit sales benefit Teen Kitchen Project, a non-profit organization that brings young people into the kitchen to cook delicious and nourishing meals for individuals and families coping with life-threatening illnesses in Santa Cruz County. The group is also competing in the Chili Cook-Off for the first time.
