2020 Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Results

Cook-Off Raises $81,000 for Santa Cruz Parks & Rec.

SANTA CRUZ, CA (February 28, 2020) – The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and City of Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation Department announced that the 39th Annual Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook-Off last weekend raised $81,000 for Parks & Recreation Department programs.  The big event has raised over $1,658,250 for Parks & Rec since 1981.

Chef Elbert Richard from Latin Asian Fusion Food Trucks and Catering, a new competitor from Scotts Valley, took home the judge’s top prize for their Professional Boston Chowder. “We loved the competition, it was so much fun,” said owner Roddy Diaz. “It was a great opportunity to meet the community and many people from outside the Bay Area including Sacramento, San Diego and Los Angeles.”

Also in the Professional Boston category, chef John Viray led JV’s BBQ to a 2nd place finish, and Sutter Health’s chef Corby Chavez brought home a 3rd place.

Two returning competitors with an excellent track record were rewarded for their Manhattan chowders.Michael Midgley's Public House in Stockton won Best Professional Manhattan and Derek Rupp’s East Side Eatery, took home second place.

While 10 judges chose their winners in a blind tasting, the public picked their favorites after sampling along the Boardwalk. Chef John Viray with JV’s BBQ and chef Josh Martin with the UCSC Chowder Slugs received  the top “People’s Choice” Awards.

In the Amateur division, Tim Dellgard’s Spud Brothers from Idaho, won best Amateur Boston. Long-time competitor DragonMama’s won Best Amateur Manhattan for their family's delicious Portuguese Red.

Cook-Off at the Boardwalk. This was the fourth year the cook-off was held over two days, with amateurs competing on Saturday, February 22 and Professionals on Sunday, February 23. Parks & Rec uses the money raised to fund a scholarship program that allows children from low-income families to participate in their programs.
