Boardwalk Chili Cook-Off Fires Up
SANTA CRUZ, CA (October 20, 2016) – The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk’s Chili Cook-Off gets underway rain or shine this Saturday, October 22. Chefs from all over Northern California will be mixing up big pots of chili along the Boardwalk, hoping to win cash prizes and bragging rights. With over 50 entries this year, most competitors will cook traditional chili, but vegetarian chili retains a loyal following with 10 different chefs preparing a meat-free chili.
While the chili competition is serious business, the atmosphere is all about fun. This year’s crop of entertaining team names includes: Dragonmama’s Politically Incorrect Chili, Make Chili Great Again, 4 Men and a Jalapeno, Chili Chili Bang Bang, and Lonesome Dove’s Old Red. Competitors and visitors attend the event from all over Northern California.
Admission is free, Tasting Kits are $10 for 6 samples. Cooking starts at 10am, and public tasting gets underway at 1pm. Winners will be announced during an award ceremony near the Beach Bandstand at 4pm. Tasting Kits will be on sale at Boardwalk Ticket Booths.
The Marine Mammal Center, a private non-profit dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating marine mammals, will receive a portion of the proceeds from this year’s Chili Cook-Off. In addition to rescuing marine mammals, the organization presents Ocean Ecology classes for school groups visiting the Boardwalk throughout the spring.
Boardwalk rides are open during the event, weather permitting.
